The internet was a buzz yesterday as AEW was set to put on its annual Blood and Guts show live from Boston, MA. There was no indication that a women's match was scheduled. The only matches that were being promoted were the following: Jack Perry vs Hook, MJF/Adam Cole vs Sammy Guevara/Daniel Garcia, and the Blood and Guts match between the Golden Elite and the Blackpool Combat Club. When Dynamite opened up last night, fans were informed that their star female talent, Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D would be in action.
As a female, the fake outrage for women not being on a show is laughable. There was no need to have a women's match on a show where one match was going to consume a majority of a two-hour program. According to Dave Meltzer, from Wrestling Observer Radio, the Baker match was short only because AEW did not want to have to deal with fake outrage of not having a women's match on the card last night. He also states that AEW Creative did not want to shorten any of the three main matches so that small time frame was all they had. Did it do anything for either of the ladies in the match? Maybe? Baker was not on last week's show and it's been said she has been dealing with injuries. For her opponent, it may have gotten her name out there, but I did not even know who Baker was wrestling until I heard another podcaster mention Kayla's name.
From a female perspective, AEW should have told the fans to shove it and explain that they did not have time for a women's match on the card tonight. They are giving you a women's match on Friday night during their Rampage episode. This outrage is nothing more than attention seekers wanting to cry about something that really has no effect on them in any personal way. AEW has had women's matches as the main event of their Dynamite shows 9 times compared to their competition, WWE which has only had 3 women's matches as the main event on their shows. I hate to break it to many of you, women do not draw as men wrestlers. I will suggest if you want to see great women's matches, then go check out IMPACT Wrestling or Stardom. It was not going to kill the wrestling fan if a show did not have a women's match on because of time. How many times has WWE cut women's matches in favor of other segments..... I will wait for you to go look that up. In fact last month a Bailey match got scraped because WWE Creative wanted to do something else in its place.. and YES it involved men. Where was the outrage then? I will again wait.
Has women's wrestling gotten more time on air from when I originally began watching some 40 years ago? Absolutely. In fact, when I first started watching wrestling women were no more than basic managers or valets. No promoter was going to actually let a woman get in a wrestling ring and actually fight back then. Thanks to the women in the business who did fight their way into the ring and get promoters to look at women as someone who could get in a ring and be entertaining. A company not putting on a women's match once In a rare occasion is no reason for the fake outrage. It's not like the women of AEW get shafted and have their matches scraped every week.
